Record book. Benson 1935-6 [reverse of front leaf is blank] 1 Benson, Sept. Oct. 26. 1935. Went to Logan as Carrie wanted to attend Relief Society meeting. It was quite a mild sunny day. After getting family supplies, we called a few minutes to see Ruth and then came home. The boy are very busy harvesting their beets; they have two men helping them. Sun, Oct. 27, went to Sunday School, Mother, Cecil and I went in the Buick. I let Cecil drive which pleased him. When we arrived home we had dinner and then drove to Logan, according to an invitation to see Mr. & Mrs. John T. Cain, who were celebrating their 50 wedding anniversary. From Logan we drove to Smithfield and saw Uncle Soren who was at the Seeley home for a short visit, We went to the evening meeting. The time was taken by Rex Funk, Joseph Larson and Cecil. 2 who gave an account of their Scout friends. They did very well in the description of what they saw on the trip, Oct 30, Spent the day at home. Andrea came down see us. Basil came with her The weather is giving evidence of an approaching storm. It looks like the Italian army are slackering up in their activities against the Ethepeans The boys and their help are busy digging sugar beets. Wed. Oct. 30 – Had quite a fall of snow last evening but the day is beautiful and the snow is disappearing not as fast however as if it were not so cold. The boys are digging beets today but it is far from being a pleasant job, They are nearly through on my land and the crop has been about average[-] 3 I think I am getting stronger every day Arvel and Lowell thought they would go deer – hunting today but the changed their plans and are working in the beets, I let Cecil drive the car to meeting last evening as Arvel went with him. Helens baby is quite restless during the night and cries a good deal; however he is growing quite fast. I wrote a letter to R.B.T. Taylor today Thurs. Oct. 31- There was quite a layer of snow on the ground this morning which made it rather discouraging on the beet harvester, Two of the toppers – (Jone’s Brothers) did not how up today. Arvel & Lowell were busy all day. Cecil went to school. I spent the afternoon reading mostly about the war and other News events The Etheapeans are making it rather disagreeable for the Italians 4 Oct 31 – 1935 continued. The Etheapians are showing a good deal of cleverness in their maneuvers. Nov. 2 We are having stormy weather, but the boys continue digging beets, They are now working on the “Grandpa” land, having finished the beets in my field, It is very disagreeable for them to work in the stormy weather. Yesterday morning wife was going into the bath room and missed her bearing and went down the steps and had a very bad fall cutting a gash in her head, bruising one of her limbs quite badly and had a very severe shaking up. Ruth came down yesterday morning and she is having considerable pain however I think she is feeling much better We certainly hope she will soon be alright, Ruth went to Logan this evening but she is coming back. Today Ruth – is 21 year’s old. She and Norman seem to be getting along well together. 5 1935 Oct. 3rd Mon. Yesterday Roland and Alla came to see us. The main object of their coming to the ward was to have their baby blessed and was named Alta Renee. On the way from Wellsville Roland had an accident in the breaking of his head lights and the damaging of his Radiator, by running into a truck that was ahead of him stopping and as the road was very slick Roland could not stop his car. It took until about 10 p.m. to get it fixed and after he had to drive to Corrinne with Alta and then down to where he is working to start work at 6 a.m. this morning. Roland brot. us the most of half of a deer he shot. Last evening we had quite a crowd, viz. Leland & wife and Harry and Lee, Willis, Andrea, Blain, Beth and Basil, Arvel - Gene & 2 children. Bob & Norma & 2 children Norma & Ruth, Lowell & wife & babe 6 Norma has been here doing her washing today. She has had a very hard day’s work as her children have been so trying. It is a cold day Carrie is slowly recovering from the severe bruses she had by falling down the stairs last Thurs. due to a mistake in her bearings. Dr. Rees was down last evening and said he thought she was getting along alright. Due to the storm and cold Arvel and Lowell have not worked in the between today Nov. 5 – 1935, Carrie is still bedfast The weather is very cold and stormy. It is very disagreeable for men working in the beets. Arvel and Lowell are kept very busy at the many different jobs they have to do, Cecil went to M.I.A. tonight Newel and Ione came down to see us tonight. Andrea has been with us today and is staying with us tonight we very much apreciate her help, 7 1935 Sun. Nov. 10, Spent the day at home as my wife is still bedfast with a badly brused leg caused from her fall down stairs. On Sat. All the sisters and the sisters-in law went to visit Annie Reeder and had dinner with her as it was the 48th anniversary of her birth. They had an enjoyable time, notwithstanding a blizzard came in the afternoon, but they all got home safe and sound. Ann Eliza wrote me a nice letter a few days before the event urging me to come up, but I thought it best to stay home with my dear wife in her trouble. Mon. Nov. 11. Norma is here doing her washing and it is a fine day. She is also washing our clothes. Ruth was with us three days last week, but she went home last night as Norm came down Sat. night for her Cecil is recovering from the accident he had Fri. of getting his nose broke in the foot-ball game. Dr. Reese took care of him 8 1935 Nov. 11 – (Mon.) There have been bad storms in several parts of the world lately; but it looks like it is going to clear away as it is fine today Nov. 12, Ione came down to see us and brot a very nice lunch which we all enjoyed. Andrea came down in the evening and spent the night with us. Carrie is slowly recovering, Gene and Arvel spent the evening with us. John an Annie visited a short while Wed, 13. Bright cool morning. I think the wife is getting better Lowell’s & Helen’s babe cries a good deal especially at night. Cecil has gone to school again today. Gordon came from Logan to see us yesterday, By letting his beard grow he has greatly changed his appearance Nov, 13 - Andrea is still with us; she says she likes to stay with us and we appreciate her company and her help. Basil is usually in a happy mood but sometimes he is greatly out of sorts, 9 Friday Nov, 15 - The boys are plowing and helping load a truck that is hauling our share of the beets. The boys – Arvel and Lowell take turnes in helping load beets while the other is plowing. Sat - Rained a good deal and a layer of snow was on the ground this a.m. Willis came down in the evening and Sat took Andrea Home, Cecil has been plowing today, but it has been a rather bad day to work out. Lucile Hobb came up to work for us. It has rained quite a bit today Sun. Nov. 17. Stormy day Lucile went to S.S. and spent the day at home. She came up after the evening meeting Norma and Bob went to H.P. Cecil went with them. I spent the day home visiting with Carrie and reading. Arvel and Gene spent awhile with us. It was a damp wet day. Mon. 18. Raining again today Mother is improving & is able to sit up. 10 1935 Nov. Mon 18 (Continued) One of the boys is loading beets at the pile, notwithstan- ding the rain. Wife is much improved. I am feeling quite well today. Lucile came up after meeting last night. The war in Etheopia is still on. There are many airplain fatalities King ford Smith, a very noted flyer had been missing several days and the supposition is that he has been killed The agitation along the liens of Politics is quite prevalent throughout the U.S. The Republicans are doing everything they can to get back into power, notwithstanding the failure that Mr. Hoover was due to the direction and dectation of prominent members of the Republican party, and the many benificial changes made by Pres. Roosevelt, which should be aided by the sentiments and actions of the people of this Republic. 11 1935 Tues. Nov. 19, Have had a beautiful day. Trucks are busy hauling away the Beet pile in this vicinity. Lowell & Arvel are helping the loading of the beets. Lucile Hobbs did the washing today Arvel & Gene had supper with us. Carrie is getting along alright and Dr. Rees says she may use her leg if she desires to do so; but I think she better be content to wait until she is better than she is as her leg is still showing signs of a bad bruise. I seem to be getting stronger but I cannot stand the cold very well. Wed. Nov. 20. Had a quiet peaceful forenoon and did a good deal of reading in the book written by John Henry Evans. He is a clever writer and well posted on Book of Mormon history. I read several chapters. Gene and Norma and their children were with us during the p.m. Norme & Ruth came down in the evening & had supper with us 12 1935? Nov. 21- Beautiful day. Carrie sat at the table for the first time since her fall to eat breakfast. Last evening I had a most distressing pain through my chest and shoul- ders, due, no doubt to my rupture; however about 10 p.m. I went up stairs to bed and went to sleep. I have never suffered more distressing pain than I experience for a couple of hours last evening. The boys. Arvel & Lowell are still helping to load beets on trucks at the beet pile. The haulers expect to finish today. They have surely made a quick job of it. I have read a sketch of Socrates, written by Elbert Hubbard. He was no doubt a great man in his day, but would be an object of commisuration today, due to his eccentricities. Hubbard’s writing are scholtarly and instructive. It was a great tragedy when the Lucitanea was sent down by the German war ship off the coast of Ireland. 13 1935 Friday Nov. 22, This has been a fine day but rather too cold for me to be out much so I have spent the day reading and writing. I have written a letter to Roland. Arvel and Gene had supper with us. The boys have spent most of the day loading out beets from the Reese pile on two trucks that are hauling for them, Lucile Hobbs is still with us and she is a very good competent girl. Carrie was out in the kitchen for her meals today, but she is suf- fering with her brused leg yet but it is getting better, How thankful I shall be when she is alright again. We learn what is going on in the world over the radio. There are many things happening. The Italian-Etheape- [---] is probably the most distressing. The Political pot is boiling and while there are strenious efforts of the Republican party to get the reigns of government the chances are in favor of Roosevelt. 14 1935. Nov. 23- Sat. I drove my car to Logan today and had it greased and the battery charged at the Blair Garage. I paid my taxes. It was a beautiful day. Sun. Nov. 24- I let Cecil drive the car to Sunday School and Miss Hobbs rode down with him. Newell Ione, Wanda & Leland. Willis and Andrea and Laree, Robert and Norma Reeder, Arvel and Gene Reese, Lowell and Helen, Cecil and Norm and Ruth Dahle. Carrie received several beautiful presents 15 Monday, Nov. 26. Monday- Carrie is not feeling so well today so she spent the day in bed after getting breakfast Mr. Robt B.T.Taylor and wife and Mrs. Cannon and Aunt Mary Reese came down to see us late in the after noon as they had been at a funeral in Logan of a relative. They staid only a short time as they were going back to S.L. City Bro. T. brot me several good books. Tues, Carrie was not able to get up as her leg was painful; so I prepared breakfast, It is cloudy today and looks like a storm is approaching near by, I feel much better than I did yesterday. Friday, Nov. 29- I went to Logan to- day and took Andrea home as she was quite ill. I went to Logan and had my battery installed at a cost of $1.35 Got a few groceries- meat, bread &c. Came home on my way my car stopped. Two Ford agents 16 took me home by pushing my car Arvel fixed it so it run alright. Carrie is gradually getting better. Sat Nov. 30, Spent the day at home. Sun, Dec. 1- William and Winnie came down and spent the day with us. We had a pleasant visit. Cecil drove my car to S.S. Arvel and Gene went with him I have considerable difficulty in breathing Mon. Jan. . 2. I am not feeling very well today as I have so much trouble breathing Weather conditions are no doubt the cause. Carrie has done most of the house work today. We leared that the home and barn of the Stewa[-]t family were distroyed by fire Sat. afternoon, It was a big loss for them; the family family were in Wellsville visiting their relatives. Mon, Dec. 2, Norma did our washing today Carrie has done the house work today Arvel and Lowell have been plowing today It is cloudy this evening. I have been poorly in health today. 17 1935 Tues. Dec. 3- This is a beautiful day. The boys, Arvel and Lowell are plowing. I have been helping the good wife in do- ing up the house-work so now we have an opportunity to read and write. I am feeling much better than I did yesterday for which I am very thankful Wed, Dec. 4th We – wife and I – are feeling quite well today. The weather is a fine day Norma came up and spent a few hours with us. Arvel and Gene had dinner with us Carrie and I spent the day read- ing. It looks like a storm is approaching. Spent the day writing history of the ward. Thurs. Dec. 5, It rained in the night and today is somewhat stormy. Arvel and Lowell went to Smithfield for their checks for hauling beets from the pile. Cecil went with us. We drove down to see the H.P. folks. On the way home we went around the Cut-off way and we had only got a short distance when the car stopped and after waiting about an hour Earl Jorgensen who was on his way to Logan turned round and pushed us home. Norma and children, Leon and [-]ivilla, Arvel, Gene & Mona and Arvel, Gene and children had dinner with us. Lowell and Helen went to Logan this morning and did not get home in time to eat with us. However they got home in time to help with the chores. Carrie wrote a poem today. I am feeling fairly well today. Thur. 12. Rather Stormy. Carrie went to Logan with Bob and Norma today and made some purchases. They made the trip alright; but I was somewhat con- cerned as Bob’s car is not always dependable The wife stood the trip alright, but it was her only ride for about 6 weeks due to the bad fall she had down stairs. I am very glad she is able to be around again, however she has need of more improvement 20 1935 Dec. Fri. It is snowing today. Arvel & Gene went to Logan. I would have gone if it had been a fine day. I am feeling fairly well today, but not able to get out in the cold. Sat. Dec. 14. There was quite a thick film of snow on the ground this morning but it slowly disapeared. Carrie wrote a clever little poem this a.m. I am not able to stand much cold, but hope to grow stronger I hope to be able to stand the Winter through and feel able in the Spring to do little work. I am thankful that we are all as well and comfortable as we are. The strife, contention, and war that is in the world is grievous. The peaceful condition existing in Utah and the adjoining states where L.D. Saints reside. 21 1935 Sun, Dec. 15 – “Mother” and Cecil went to S.S. and stopped attend meeting. Carrie is busy writing poetry a job at which she is getting quite pro- ficient. 22 1935 Tues. Dec. 17. Beautiful day except it is quite cold. Arvel and Lowell have been working with a sick cow belonging to Cecil awhile this morning. They killed two pigs today and there is one more to kill so each one will have a pig. Carrie and I went to Logan in the Buick today; it went fine not one minute’s trouble did I have with it which speaks weel for Arvel & Lowell who put it in running order. I got my check for beets of years passed from the Co. agent. As a Xmas gift, I bought Carrie a pretty ring and neckless as a Xmas gift We got home at dusk, but I have felt the cold quite keenly this afternoon The weather is quite cold but I do not think I shall suffer from after effects of the cold. Lowell and Cecil are doing the chores tonight as Arvel & Gene, according to previous arrangements, staid in Logan There is only a film of snow on the ground. The Italians and the Etheopians are having a bad time fighting. England and other Europeans nations are considering the matter of helping the Etheopians and thus put and end to the war. It is a bad act on the part of Italy to wage war against the Etheopians. There is certainly no justifiable reason for their doing so. Kidnappers have been active in the U.S. lately. Several have been killed by outlaws, while others have been made to suffer. Selfishness is at the bottom of a big share of the deaths and suffering existing. 25 Sun, Dec. 22. Carrie, Cecil and I went to Sunday School. Bob and Norma came up and had dinner with us. It was a cold day. Mon, Dec. 23, Cold day and I spent the day at home. I got somewhat better in the evening. Blaine is here with us. Cecil and he have good times together Dec, 29 Sat. There was quite a fall of snow here during the but in some parts of the country there has much suffering due to the cold weather. There are many distressing events throughout the Country – due mostly to the wickedness of the people, who have little regard for decency. But there are many very fine people in the U.S. and in all parts of the world, for which I am truly thankful. The many close and dear friend I have. My dear wife, Sons and daughter are a great comfort to me Sun. Dec 30 All the folks went to S. School except me, It was too cold for me to go as I was not feeling very strong. Arvel and Gene spent the evening with us Blain is here with us. 27 Mon. Dec, 31. Had quite a fall of snow during the night and there have light falls during the morning hours. Norma and children are here with us and are planning to spend the night with us. While I feel better than I did yesterday, I do not feel very strong. There come reports over the radio that there have been some very cold destructive storms in several parts of the country. The Lindburg family, acording to reports, have reached Great Britain where they may make their home for some time. While in America there were several attempts to kidnap him or members of his family. The Italian=Etheopean was is still on and it appears that the Italian army is getting rather the worst of it. The Etheopians seem to have the sympathy of all or nearly all of the world They should have as they are fighting for their homes and country 28 1936. Jan, . Roland has had a cold day to move his belongings from here to Providence today; but when he undertakes a job he stays with it. The speech of Pres. Roosevelt recently is stirring up the Republicans and some of them are doing all they can to try to weaken his influence in the nation, so they may get into power. It is strange that we get so biased that we cannot see any good in the opposite party to which we have given our allegiance. Tues. Jan, 8 There was quite a fall of snow last night and this forenoon. We are thankful to have it snow as it meant spring water. I have not been out of the house during the past three days only as far as the post box or the yard. Carrie is taking a lot of interest in me and guards me from the cold in every way she can. Today she is typing a lot of the poems I have written. She certainly has a lot of determination and endurance. 31 1936 The act of congress to kill the AAA is causing much commotion throughout the U.S.A. Instead of the Republicans gaining any strength by their act, it will be a loss to them at the next election. Pres. Roosevelt is doing all he can – and that is a good deal to help the entire population of the United States., and his name will go down in history as a wonderful man, which he certainly is Thur. Jan. 9. The cold cold weather has moderated. The snow-fall, while not as heavy as we would like is very welcome. I feel better than I have for some time; but I stay home to avoid getting more cold. It is no 10 oclock p.m. and he has not got home yet, so I am waiting up for him I have done more outside chores today than I have done for over a week as it has been so nice and warm, We have had snow and rain lately that I think will prove a great blessing this coming spring. There have been many heavy snow storms in the West lately. There have also been some very distructive wind storms lately in many places. both on sea and on land. Many lives have been lost due to these storms. We are in hopes of having more rain and snow before Spring comes 34 1935 Jan. 15 – Today has been quite warm & cloudy. The accident cannot be accounted for as weather conditions were good. 35 Jan. Fri. 17. Gov. Hoffman granted Hauptmann a reprive today for 30 days which has arroused the indignation of many people. Hoffman is being severely cencured for his action. and Hoffman is quite defiant in his attitude. The severe storms throughout the world is causing much distress. We are having some pleasant weather. Lowell traded for an 1935 V-Eight While it has been used some it is in good condition and is a nice car. I received a notice today that the payment is now due on the Pump which is a share. I have had a good bath and change of underclothes since the folks left for S.S. Pres. Roosevelt vetoed a bill passed by congress recently; he made a six minute talk before he vetoed the Soldier’s bill provi- ding for the payment of the soldiers for service in the World war. Last evening Alfred Smith made a speech critizing the president. I did not like the speech of Smith who is claiming to be a stauch Democrat but his talk was a cutting criticism of Roosevelt. Newel and Ione called in the evening and spent a short time visiting with us. I has felt better today than I have for sometime. 39 1936 Mon. Jan 27 After a very cold night the sun is out bright and clear and it is getting warme as the day passes. The wife did a small washing this morning. We, as a family, are in fairly good health. I am gaining in strength every day. In some parts of the Rocky mountains it is very cold. I think, however, that we are having a pleasant winter. Tues. Jan 28. The weather has moderated some but it is still quite cold; however I have no occation to complain as I stay in the house nearly all the time going out only occasionally to get coal or kindling Lowell & wife and my wife and Arvel & wife have gone to Logan to see the Show in the Capitol. I am home alone – i.e. if a person can be alone when there are papers to read and many good books. I have not felt lonesome in the least degree. Politics are raging to the extent of slander The soldiers bonus [--] the World has been made payable by a majority vote of Congress. 40 1936 Wed. Jan. 29 Had a very cold night and it is cold this morning notwithstanding the bright sun is shining and doing all he can to warm up the atmosphere, but I am thankful that we are as well as we are. and so comfortable provided for. Politics are engaging the attention of people especially those who are clammering for political offices and there are man thus afflicted. Thurs. Jan. 30 Spent the day reading and writing. Mother went to Smithfield with Lowell and Helen. It was a cold day. Mother spent a short while visiting her sister Mary. Fri. 31. I and glad this is the last day of Jan. As the weather has been so cold. The clouds are gathering and forecasts a storm. Sat. Feb. 1 It is very cold but there are signs of snow. We all spent the day at home Ruth and Norm came down and had[--] dinner with us. 41 This morning Dr. N.E. Munk was climbing up on a ladder to clear off the heavy layer of snow when the ladder slipped out and he fell and broke his heel causing him great agony. Mon. Feb. 3. There was an additional fall of snow through the night making motering heavy and dangerous and giving promise of plenty of irrigation water during the coming summer, which is encouraging to the farmers and every one for that matter. Lowell took his wife to Smithfield this morning to do her washing. Arvel is choring. There are a few cars running as the grader has been at work. The snow has piled up on the roofs, making it possible for a break in. Tues. Feb, 4. The storm has not cleared off- yet. From all parts of the world come the word that the weather is very cold in Northern countries but in the U.S. there are heavy falls of snow. and in some parts the traines cannot run. and all trafic is greatly hampered. Mother has gone to Logan with Arvel in my Car. Lowell is choring. All arrived home safe. 42 1936 The folks arrived home O.K. at 5.35 p.m. Seems that the storm is about over but it is quite cold. The soldiers are receving their war money, for which I am very glad as they i.e. some of them badly need it. Senator Borah has announced himself a cadidate for the Presidency. He is a strong man and, no doubt might make a good president; but I think he has been flatered into making the race; but he will not get the job. Wed, Feb. 5. It is cloudy with an occasional fall of snow however it is not as cold as it has been. Norma, with her children, has spent the afternoon with us. Bob came up for them Thur. Feb. 6. This has been a stormy blusterous day. Sardine Canyon is blocked for travel by the deep snow-drifts Last night many cars were stranded. The Bus travel has been blocked so the Salt Lake papers have not reached us. The snow storms have no doubt provided sufficient moisture for the cumming crops. Today Bob & Morma left their children with us. They were late getting home and we heard they would fail to get home but they did 43 1936 Fri, Feb. 7. The wind blew so hard during the night that the school buses were unable to get through, so the school boys and girls were un- able to attend school. The milk haulers are using horses and sleighs today to haul milk The greatest trouble is high snow-drifts. Lile and her folks cannot get through the snow. The schools cannot run today, due to the deep snow. We are well stocked up with coal, which is a great blessing to us. I hope there is no suffering throughout the land. A.V. brought Will Chantrill up to see us yesterday afternoon He and his wife used to live in Benson. James married Susie and James married Mabel martineau all of whom lived in Benson in earlier days. Now, at 12.30 a.m., the snow is still drifting and the sun is shinging occasionally through the clouds. The school boys and girl who attend school in Smithfield and North Cache are at home today due to the heavy fall of snow and the snow drifts. 44 1935 Sat. Feb. 8. The wind continues to blow, driving in heeps the beautiful snow. The shoels are going, clearing the way, That people may travel upon the highway. Man years have elapsed since the snow was as deep as it is now. Arvel and Lowell have gone to the meadow for hay; one with the rubber tired wagon and the other with bobs They got along alright. I am thankful we are all as well as we are. Sun, Feb. 9. We received word that [--] R.W. Seeley passed away today and Mother went to Smithfield to see them. Arvel took height in his car. The graders have cleared the snow off the roads so automobiles can travel fairly well if the drivers will stay on the road. Mon. Feb. 10. Cloudy but there are signs of the weather clearing up. Lowell, Helen and Carrie went to Smithfield this morning. Mother went to spend the day with her sister. Helen went up to her mother’s to do her washing. I am not feeling exactly well. 45 1936 Feb. I wrote a letter to AJ Fife today inviting him and his wife to come over and see us. Tues. 11 – The weather has moderated, but it has begun snowing again. There are reports of many fatalities throught the country due to cold wind and snow storms. I think the snow we are having will prove a blessing to the country this coming summer as it will furnish irrigation water. Arrangements are being made for the funeral service of R.W. Seeley tomorrow. I hope the day will be pleasant. I feel better in health today than I did yesterday. Wed. Feb. 12. Mother and Cecil went with Lowell & Helen to Smithfield today to at- tend the Funeral services of R.W. Seeley It has been a th[--]ing windy day. The snow is sinking. A ‘phone mes- sage coveyed the sad word that Ruth was ill. Helen took Carrie up to see her. The folks left after dinner Norma & children Arvel & Gene and their children; Lowell & Helen also hadn dinner with us. Lowell went to the meadow and got a load of hay. By the papers and the Radio we learn that there is much strife and trouble throughout the land. Arvel got the Smithfield Robert & wife Soren & wife from Smithfield and took them back in the Buick. Cecil did not go to school today. 47 1936 Sat. Feb. 15- Carrie and Arvel and wife went to Logan in the Buick Gene did not come home and Arvel staid with us. Sun. Feb. 16. The cost this year is $500 per car Friday Feb. 21. It is still clowdy with an occational light fall of snow. I am sending Dr. O. Wernergren a check for service he claimed to have given a crippled horse some time ago. I was not aware he had done anything 49 for about a year later and as he did not come until after sundown I decided he was not coming and I was quite surprised a year later when he dunned me for $250 which he claimed I owed him. I denied the ob- ligation, but I have decided to pay him according to his charge as I should feel bad to die thinking he held that amt against me; so I am now sending him the check. Sun. There was quite a fall of snow on the ground this morning but the wind and sun have taken it off; however there are indications of snow tonight. The weather announcer over radio says there have been some bad storms in several parts of the country and lives have been lost on account of these storms Be means of the radio announcements we learn of the existing conditions through the world. The case of the killing of the Lindberg baby is still one of the leading topics of the day. 26 <25> Tues. Spent the day as usual in reading and writing. Feb. Wed. 26- Beautiful day, after a blusterous night. The clouds are clearing away for which we are thankful as we have had a long spell of blustery, stormy weather which is fine in the providing of moisture for the crops the coming summer. The roads are in bad condition as the frost is coming out of the ground. We are all in fairly good health this morning. 51 1935 Fri. Feb. 28/- This is a beautiful day. Yesterday afternoon Lowell took mother and me for a ride in his new V. Eight Helen also went to Logan with us to see Leon’s wife who recently gave birth to a baby girl that died at birth. The Italian-Etheopean war has come to an end, as the Etheipians were not able to hold their ground any longer. The Political Pot is boiling in the U.S. The Republican party are putting forth every effort to get the control of the nation, but my guess is that they will not win, and it would be a bad thing for the country should Roosevelt lose out 53 1936 Thurs. Carrie went to Smithfield today with Helen, to see her sister; so I am alone today but I am happy as I have plenty of reading matter. 54 1935 <6> March Sat. Febr 7. The women folks planned a birthdy surprise on Alta who is nowing in a rented house belonging to A.J. Fuhriman of Providence. The surprise was a complete success. Those who were at the surprise were Carrie, Naoma, Annie, Wanda, Andrea. Naoma, and Ruth. I was there awhile and a very nice dinner was served as it had been previously arranged that I should be there among my daughters After lunch was served I drove to Logan and settled with the state for my artesian well which cost $1100 for the four wells I own. This arrangement protects me from any intereferance in my claims. I drove back to Providence and got Carrie, Andrea, Wanda, & Ruth. I drove to Hyde Park and left Wanda and Andrea and then came home. I stood the trip alright - Arrived home about sundown feeling alright. 55 1936 Mar 8. Sun. Carrie and I went to The Cache Stake conference in Logan. Pres. Chas. We wanted to take him to the Dr, but he objected Lowell & Hellen went to Clifton today to see relatives. They made the trip alright 58 1936 March It seems that more disasters occur now than ever I have known. The yesterday News tells of 200 school children being unable to leave the schoolroom due to 20 feet of snow. All of New England has been badly hit with snowstorms & floods. While there have been disasterous con- dition in may parts of the U.S. we have not been injured so far but have had nice weather Sat. Mar. 21 Carrie and spent the day at home. Clouds gathered in the evening and re- sulted in rain and snow. The terrible floods caused by rain overfflo flowing the Mongahela and the Ohio rivers have been very destru- ctive in the distruction of homes and the death of many people Sun. Mar. 22. Carrie went to S.S. with Arvel in my car this morning. Cecil is still poorly in health, and dispondent in spirit. It is blowing hard and snowing quite hard. with drifting North wind. We learned from Ione Munk that Naoma and Reese are doing as well as can be expected. They are very badly injured. Naoma is at the Budge Hospital Reese is staying with us. They are both in a rather bad condition, but are getting better Due to Reese’s broken jaw he cannot eat any solid food, and has to subsist on liquids The stormy weather it is hard to get around. Arvel & Lowell have gone to the meadow for a load of hay. Mother would like to go to the hospital to see Naoma, but she has no way of going. Reese is in the same fix. There have been heavy falls of snow the past few days. We should have no lack of irrigation water this year. ) (P[-] Smithfield lumber & the [---] Co. $2.72 for lumber to fix Barn door. 65 1936. I hope no acciden has befallen them. It does not take much to make me feel anxious. The painting and varnishing of the Hancey boys cost $4200 I think they have done a job worth the cost. We are having a cold, stormy spell. The moisture may prove beneficial to the crops. The distructive floods in many parts of the U.S. is sad to contemplate. 74 1936 Wed. May 6. This has been a bleak cold windy day, but this evening it is getting less cold and blustery I intended to take my wife to Logan but as Lowell and Helen invited her to go with them I remained at home. I have done the evening chores pertaining to the house. I have not felt very strong today, and thought it best not to go to Logan. a Carry had a good chance to go. The Italians have subdued the Ethopians and taken their claim on Esheapi[-]. and it may be better for them as the Etheopians are far behind the people of other nations in civilation. Recently there have been a number of bad characters in the U.S. captured, one of whom is regarded as an ex- ceptional wicked character. In my way of thinking I feel that the officers are deserving of much praise for the way they catch the low down men who are a menice to the country. 75 1936 May 8- Fri. I have been considerably worried over a receipt for the ownership of my Buick Car which I traded to the Smithfield car dealers and they were anxious to get the reciept for the ownership of the Buick. I found the receipt today which has given me much relief in mind and probably was partly due to the very bad night I spent. It is well for one to be careful in his business transactions. They were traveling East from Cal. There was and excitement arroused today when the word came that the Plane had been seen in the South-western part of Utah. Carrie has been very busy during the day washing, ironing and house-cleaning. I have not felt very well today. This evening is quite chilley; but [-] it is clear. Carrie and have addressed a number of cards to relatives and friends this eve. Tues. Dec. 22. While it was quite cold this morning the day has. become quite comfortably warm. I am home alone and would be quite lonesome were it not for the abundance of reading matter we have. The Christmas is wonderful in the way the abundance of material world news has been collected and written up in the Xmas News. 130 1936 Dec. 25 This is a beautiful Xmas morning and gives promise of a beautiful day and some of the family are here now - (10.45) a.m. The numerous presents we are receiving is a conclusive evidence of the love of our children and friends. I feel very thankful that I am feeling so well, not only my own account but for the pleasure it brings to the family. The many pieces of handy work prepared by my wife, Carrie, gives conclusive evidence of her clever[-]ess and generosity. Our home is in a spick and span condition. That our peaceaple surroundings are so perfect is a source of great satisfactory condition. Alfalfa will, no doubt, be very expensive in the Spring due to the long cold winter. However we have much for which to feel very thankful when compared with many parts of the country. Cecil has gone down to get ready for the part he has to take. 146 1937 Mar. 5. This is beautiful day. Norma is visiting with us today while her mother is making a coat for Karen. What would the girls do if they did not have their mother to sew for then The snow is disappearing quite rapidly. Last evening Pres. Roosevelt delivered a very comprehensive discourse on the U.S. condition and expressed his determination to to work for the wellfare of the nation. I am sure is a man that has at heart the interest of the people of this nation as well as that of all people and nations. I am not feeling very strong today. Mar. (Monday) 8. This has been a fine spring day; but not very warm. The boys got some syrup for the cows today. The snow is slowly disapping The boys say the hay is getting low. We may have to buy some. There are many attractive activities going on but, I do not feel able to take a chance in participating. I want to be able to spend at least another year with my [remainder of previous line is finished at bottom of next page] 147 1937. Mar. 9. This is a beautiful day and the snow is rapidly disappearing. I suffered a good deal last night with from a pain in my left eye It is better today for which I am very thankful Carrie has gone to Relief Society with Helen. Arvel and Lowell are helping Reynold to start a mashine for sawing trees down. Renold is going to saw down the trees around the school lot which Charles has bought from the Board of Education; he has also bought the old school building in connection with the land upon which it stands. Arvel and Lowell are quite clever in adjusting automobiles and trucks. but it took them quite awhile to get the tree-cutter started. Gordon went North yesterday with others to work for the Olof Nelson Co. Roland may soon do the same thing. We, wife & I hope they will be preserved from accidents & harm in their travels & work. [next 2 lines finish last line on previous page] dear family. I think my wife & children wod[-] be sorry to have me leave them. 148 1937 Mar. 12 I drove the Ford to Smithfield yesterday and finished paying for it. The full price was $80000 but I was allowed $115 for the Buick. I had a fresh supply of oil put in the car. I get along O.K. in driving the new car. Norma & children spent the day with us, and Ruth & Norm came down in the afternoon, and Roland and Alta came down the evening of the 10 It is cloudy today. Heber’s folks went to Ogden today to get the husband children as Ruby passed away last Tuesday in Calf. and her husband is bringing her home here to be buried. She laves a husband and two children a boy & girl The funeral will be held Sunday in the 3rd ward meetinghouse in Logan. Mar [ink spot] Sun. Mar, 14. The funeral service for Ruby Crug was held today in the 3rd wd Chapel with Bp. Evans in charge. There was 149 a large turnout and a splendid srvice. The speakers were Melvin Ballard, Benson, also M.J. Falslev both of whom knew her as a young girl who played the organ at public services. A.V. Reese was also a speaker at the services. The house was filled with relatives and friends. The singing was by the choir and by Nora Eliason and A large number of cars filled with sympathic relatives and friends went to the cemetary. Foster Reese dedicated the grave. Mon. Mar. 15, The folks went to Logan, but I did not go as it was quite stormy. Tues. <16> Fine day Wife went to Logan in my car with Lowell as driver. I spent a lonesome day at home but on account of the damp atosphere it were better for me to stay at home. 17, Wed. Norme & Ruth and Alta & children and spent the day with us 150 Mar. Wed Wed. con. There is a big entertainment planned for tonight Carrie & Lowell & wife, Arvel and wife have gone down Cecil and I staid at home. Cecil is busy getting his lesson for tomorrow He is quite studious and is evidently doing a good work in the North-Cache High school. He is now typing his lesson for tomorrow. He is making good head-way in typing especially with the machine in poor condition I think we shall buy a new typer writer. I received a very nice letter recently from Pres Joseph Quinney who has recently been installed as president of the temple. During the fourteen years I served with Dr. O.C. Ormsby and W.H. Apperly as the Cache Stake Supt. Bro. Quinney served as Secy and Samuel B. Mitton as Chorister I learned to love them for their faithful- ness. 151 1937 Benson Mar. 15 There was quite a fall of snow & rain during the night and today. It is still stormy now at 4 o’clock p.m. The road in front of our place is bad as the ground is so soft that deep ruts are made in the road. Several autoes have had to be pulled out. It has been storming all day. and is still storming. I have spent most of the day reading. The papers tell of bad storms in many places. Now at 4.30 p.m. The snow is coming thick and fast, but is thawing as soon as it reaches the ground I have spent a good deal of the day read- ing the papers, that tell of disasterous conditions in many parts of the world. We are wishing for good weather so we can plant our crops. Carrie and Lowell & Helen attended the en- tertainment of the Ward [illegible deletion] evening given to raise means for the ward. A neat little sum was raised and an enjoyable spent by those who attended. A[--] had a good time I was not able to go and staid 152 1937 Mar. Feb. 8 19 Thurs. this has been a stormy day as it has snowed most of the day, but it melts as fast as it falls. The roads are very soft and splashy. In front of our place the ground is so soft cars can hardly pull through, I am feeling farely well today. Since yesterday morning it has stormed so much that the roads are bad Cecil has just got home from school and he says the roads are bad. We shall have a late spring if it does not quit storming soon, as there is so much moisture in the ground that it will re- quire a lot of warm weather to dry up the farms for planting the crops. Fri. Mar. 19. Beautiful day and we are all in good health, but I do not feel very strong. The recent storms have caused bad roads. The snow that fell during the night has disappeared and the the warm sun is doing its best to improve the roads that in this vicinity are soft and bad to travel. 153 1937 Mar. 28 This is a rather blusterous day; however Carrie and Gene have gone to Logan and Lowell & Helen to go later, Bro. Erastus Lamb and Willis came down a while ago and led a colt away with them which they bought from Arvel I think. Willis bought a colt from Arvel. recently. There is a big demand for horses at present. Mar. 2[-] Yesterday <(Tues)> it snowed a good deal of the day, but the snow has all gone tonight. The folks have done a lot of work today cleaning up the house after the paper hanger, who did a very good job. The home looks like a palace tonight. Several people have gone to surprize Jesse T. Rees tonight Cyril Munk took mother down. I intended to go but my left eye caused so much pain that I decided not to try to go. Cecil took sick in school today and I got Arvel to take my car and get him the [---] feeling [---] tonight. 154 1937 24 Wed. The snow has all gone in the valley as this has been a beautiful day. This morning Carrie and Helen did their washing and this afternoon, with Gene’s help, they have cleaned the house up nicely. After spending the winter and up until tonigh Carrie and have slept down stairs on the Folding-bed. The house is cleaned and papered all through and it looks fine. Mr. Hansen of Smithfield did the papering, and he has done a very neat good job. Tonight a large number of the friends met at the schoolhouse where it had been planned to surprize Jesse T. Rees and succeeded splendidly. Carrie went but I did not feel able to go. Sat Mar. 27. Went to Smithfield to see Dr. Rees in regard to my physical condition according to am[---] Dr.Roland F.M[--]ks 155 1937 who is an eye specialist. He gave me an examination and proposed that I call on Dr. Rees, who said I was in a good phy ical condition. Carrie went with me and Helen drove my car. Got along alright. Tues. Mar 29. Went to see Dr. Rees Dr. Roland F Marks. He said I was getting along much better than he expected He said he was afraid my eve would have to be taken out; but now it is getting along splendidly. He expressed a joyous feeling in finding my eye so well and he gave my wife much credit for its condition. Tues. Mar. 30. Spent the day at home and my wife gave me several treatments Tues. Wed. Mar. 31. Cloudy today looking much like an approaching storm. I felt very weak and discouraged, but Carrie made me a nice breakfast and encouraged me, so I feel better now - 12.30 [ink blot]y favorable condition is due to good attention by my wife. 156 1937 April Thurs. 29. Several days have passed since I wrote, during which time I have been quite ill, and at times rather uncons cious. We are nicely housed on our farm. Our house is in nice condition as Carrie has made many improvements. During my illness Carrie has been very kind to me and done all she could to help me and make me comfortable. This is a very backward spring as the boys have just started to plow. The con- ditions of the wather has been very backward; The boys were not able to do any plowing until yesterday (Apr.29) The funeral services of James Somesen were held Fri. He has been road supervisor a number of years (16) and during that time he has given splendid service. He was a good faithful L.D.S. He has a son now on a mission in South Africa. I am quite well acquainted with the family especially George. Many splendid compliments were paid James at his funeral, giving proof of his true worth. 157 During my illness I have been treated splendidly. Many friends have come to see me as well as all the members of the family. It was gener- ally thought I could not recover in fact I am far from well yet. However I hope and pray that I may be spared to live a few years longer to be a comfort to my dear wife and family. May 4 - This is a beautiful day. I am very thankful that m[ink blot] health is much better this morning than it has been for some time. This beautiful weather is fine for the farmers in the planting of their crops. and they are rushing their work as fast as they can. Cecil has missed two days as he wants to get his share of the work done so he will have a share in the harvest to help him in his financial affairs. He is an ambitious. boy and wants to do his share. I am very glad we are in the en- joyment of as good health as we have. 158 1937 May 5 Cecil went to school today In the evening Arvel and Gene went to the temple and so did Lowell & Hellen. Arvel left his children here, but Helen took Lowell took Gerald to Smithfield until they were out of the temple. May 6. There has been a storm threatening the fore-part of the day, but this after noon it all cleared and the sun came out clear and bright. Carrie worked in the garden during most of the forenoon but she has been reading the Improvement Era most of the afternoon which is very instruc- tive. My eyes hurt me if I read much. Cecil went to school today but Arvel and Lowell have been busy planting corn &c It is a source of sorrow to me that my physical condition is not better. Mon. May 9. Cloudy today. I have suffered a lot with my eye. Yesterday Heber Maggie and Anice came down to see us We had a nice visit with them. 159 On Sunday nearly all of our relatives were here visiting with us. We had a very happy time together. Carrie served dinner to the crowd. It was a marvel to me that Carrie was prepared to feed so many. She is a splendid planner. Blain staid with us over night & went with the bus with Cecil Mon. Mon. We have recently learned that Andrea is in a precarious condition; she nearly passed away in the night and when the request was made of Dr. Daines to come out to H.P. to see her, he said he could d nothing for her as she is in such a bad condition. It was a surprize to us to learn that she was so ill as she was with us Sunday and seemed quite well and active Heber Today, Mon The boys are planting Oats and Corn in the farther field. They went to Smithfield for their seed. At this late hour the sun is coming out brightly 160 1937 May 19. The crops are starting to grow The alfalfa has attained to quite a height and cutting is not far distant. On Sunday last Carrie, Cecil and Blain went to Cornish i.e. to John Reeder’s home near Cornish. We spent a very enjoyable day visiting with them - Had a nice dinner Cecil was the driver and he did the job well. The day was beautiful and we were glad we went. Today my wife and Hellen went to a club party in Hyde Park ([-]e, Helen took carrie up there to the party and then she went to Smithfield to visit with her mother. We learned today that Wm Twy Twizell is dead. His wife died several years ago. She was a cousin of dear mother. It is a blessing he has gone as he was not very well cared for after his wife died, and he became quite crippled - He worked for me in house building 161 May 23, Yesterday mother, Helen and I went to Logan and attanded the funeral services of William Twessell , who was the husband of mother’s cousin. The attendance was small, but the services were good He was 95 <95 yr> or would have been 95 today he was a quiet industrious man, his principal occupation was a carpenter. The speakers spoke of his industry and honesty. The weather keeps quite cool. Delilalah Reese was the daughter of Nephi Tarbet, - one of the earliest settlers of Benson. I shall never forget his kindness when my wife Mary died. He came as soon as she died and withe the exception of going home to do his/ chores, he staid with us. The passing of Lile is a very sad event as she leaves two daughters and an unmarried son to mourn her lot besides two married daughters and a married son, (Leon) They are all very nice young people. One of the largests - in fact the largest I have ever seen followed the corpse to the Logan cemetary wher Lile was buried by Da[-] 162 Tues. May 2[-]-1937. Yesterday Carrie and went to Preston, with Lowell & Helen who were on their way to Clifton, and spent the day with Naoma and had a pleasant time. We arrived home shortly before dark. Mother (Carrie) has gone to Smithfield today to help her sister Mary make quielt for Robert Seeley as a wedding present The boys started the Bear river pump this morning and have given the lot a thorough soaking they are going to irrigate some of their field crops today. This is a beautiful day - quite cool The country is in quite a disturbed condation but Pres. Roosevelt is is doing all he can to improve conditions. There are so many agit[-] that it is a very difficult matter 163 1937 - May 25 Con. The weather is very beautiful today although quite cool. Among other writings, I have written to R.B.T. Taylor. I am suffering a good deal today from pain in my left eye. 1937 Friday May 28 Attended the funeral services of Abe. Jorgensen today - held in the 9th ward chappel. There was quite a large attendance and several speakers all of whom spoke in high praise of the departed. I have known Abe many years and can say that he was a splendid man. Carrie and I rode up in the Ford and Helen drove. We had to face a strong wind coming home but an hour later the wind abated. There was also a small shower. The boys have been to Smith field getting their best planter in shape also their cultivator. It costs quite a sum to keep farm[-] implements repaired 164 Sunday May 30 Very stormy day favering the county with a heavy rain. It is quite a cold day, however we went to Sunday school. Norme <& Ruth> Dahle came down and had dinner with Lowell and Helen who also furnished us dinner I was glad that I was able to go to Sunday School. We gave up the idea of going to Whitney, but we learned that Bro Foster had died. It was a cold stormy day. The death of Mr. Foster was a blessing as he had suffered for several years. June 10 - We have had some nice showers lately but it is clear and beautiful this morning. During the past few days. I have suffered a great deal with one of my eyes. and even at times, both eyes have been bat. I cannot tell what the cause is. All the rest of the family is well. Arvel, Lowell, Cecil and Blain Lamb is here working for the boys but boarding with us The crops while late, are looking fine 165 June 22. On Sunday June 20, Carrie & I and Cecil and Blain were the dinner guests of Newel and Ione Munk. After dinner Newel & Ione and Carrie & I took a ride in our car. Newel drove and we went up Logan canyon as far as the Forks. As I had not been over the road for a long time I was surprized and delighted to See what great improvements had been made in the road. There were many cars, loaded with people in the canyon. I was led to reflect upon past days when we used to go up the canyon for wood, and to haul lumber for the Logan temple. Wonderful changes have been made during the time that has elapsed. We had an enjoyable day. Monday 21 N.E. Iverson called to see us and I was very glad to see him as we were warm friends in Australia & I was mission secretary. 166 Today (Tues 22) The boys are hauling in hay. It looked very threatening for rain last evening but it did not rain for which we were very thankful This morning Friend R.R.T. Taylor called by ‘phone to know where Roland is working as he wanted to learn if there would be any chance for a young man to get work. We reported that Rolind was working at Income on the road for Olof Nelson Co. I suffer a good deal of pain in my left eye upon which Dr. Marks has been working several weeks. The treatment he prescribed causes a lot of severe pain but that is better than to loose my eye, which, according to Dr Marks would have been the case. Sunday last was the 1st day of summer While the Spring was very late, yet the crops have made good headway and the prospects as good for a good crop of beets, alfalfa and other crops. 167 Today we received a letter (rather card) from Ruth who left Logan on Sun. 13th for Cal. They seemed to be having a good time. May the blessings of the Lord be theirs. It was very trying on us to see them leave especially as there were no prospects of their finding profitable employment Wed. June 30 1937. We have received several letters from Ruth who with her husband is in Culver City - a supurb of of Los. Angeles. They say they are having but are anxious looking for to their return to Utah. Roland <& Alta & children> called a few minutes today to see us; he was looking forward to a time when he will have a home and employ- ment. Arvel and Lowell and Cecil have a prospect of a good crop this year Blain Lamb is here helping. So far we have had a beautiful spring. and are sorry to see it go. 168 1937 July 1. This has been a nice day with the exception of a warm wind. The boys finished thinning their sugar beets today. and have done some other work. They are industrious boys. Mother, Jene, Helen & Norma have enjoyed themselves during the afternoon playing cards for which I com- plained a little as I though such in- telegent people might spend their time in a more profitable manner. They are all good faithful people so perhaps I made a mistake in critizing them. The whole world are in a broil of and threatening wars are give evidence of trouble. The papers are full of ac- counts of trouble among nations and workmen in the U.S. as well as in other nations. July 2. Went to Logan and Cecil got his licence to drive automobiles. He is 16 years old today but he ot his licence yes- terday. He is usually a pleasant lad. 169 1937 - July 3. The folks are planning to spend tomorrow in Logan canyon. This has been a very warm day. William was here and had dinner with us. The day has been very warm. Gene & children have spent the afternoon here. The boys have been hoeing beets part of the day Last evening the lot had a good soaking. Sunday 24 July. Went to Sunday schoo after spending an enjoyable time at the camping grounds we came home. Bob Reeder had the misfortune in going up the canyon to have his car stop and he could not fix it Roland towed him home. It detracted from our pleasure A splendid meal was served of which Carrie provided a good share. July 25 was observed as the 24. We went to Hyde Park - Myself, Carrie Cecil & Blaine and had a good dinner with Andrea after which we watched the ball-game between Hyde P. & Smithfie It was a close tie. Saturday July 10 - Arvel took Carrie and me with them to Salt Lake City. We called at the home of our dear friend, Mr. & Mrs. R.B. Taylor, After eating a nice dinner Bro. Taylor took his wife and us for a ride to the State Capital where we found great pleasure in admiring the the many beautiful pictures. He then took us for a long auto ride around among the building of Fort Duglas and to all the homes in that vicinity, after which he took us up to the Dam where the persons were recently drowned. We slept in some 171 1957 cabins in the South part of the city which we found to be very comfortable. After spending a few hours at the park and at the Tabernacle grounds, we came home. We rode in Arvels Chivo- let. and made good time. I Logan we called at Heniger’s and got Mo[-]gine Gene and her little sister and drove home. Cecil and Blain had the chores all done as Lowell and Helen did not return from a day’s trip to Bear Lake. Mon, 5 - The boys are busy hoeing beat land. It is a beautiful day - not very hot. Mother and Helen have done their washing this morning. I feel alright after the trip Tues. This morning we arranged for a Refrid- gerator, which will be brot down totight We, Carrie, Cecil and Blaine Lamb went to Sunday School and Carrie & I staid to meeting I drove the car home. Bob & Norma & children and Arvel & Gene & children had dinner with us Blain & Cecil went out to the bathing resort last night. This is an unusual hot day. There are many distressing events taking place in the world among which is a war be- tween China & Japan many are being killed in Airplain flights. 173 Letters from Ruth gives assurance that she and Norme & babe are getting along alright in Calffornia July 21 - Yes terday I went to Logan to see Dr. Marks about my eye, he said it was in a very bad don- dition and that I must continue using hot packs and eye medicine This information made me feel bad as the medicine droped into my eye is very painful. The weather is very hot now, but the crops are growing fine. We have bought a Refrigerator which will be a very great help in keeping food in good condition The hot weather will ripen the grain very rapidly and keep the farmers very busy. Today [-]ur boys are irrigting the grain the corn and the potatoes. 174 1937 Tues. July 27, Fine day and the men folks are busy on the farm. The women are busy putting up beans for winter, Gene and Helen are putting up beans here for themselves. Lowel has been cutting grain, but he finds some of the grain on their summ too green to cut. This is a warm day, but there are signs of rain, which would be a good things in some respects. Sunday, Aug. 1 Mother, Cecil & I attended Sunday School and the meeting which immediately followed. Robert & Norma Reeder came home & had dinner as did also Andrew & Naoma Anderson and their daugh ter Gwen. Andrew took us to H.P in his new Plymoth which he recently purchased in in S.L.C. at quite a bargain Mon. Aug. 2. & 3 Remained at home. We went to Logan on the 3 to attend the funeral services of Miss Harris 175 On Aug. 3 Carrie, Jene and I went to Logan and attended the funeral services of Lettee Harris The services were held in the basement of the Logan tabernacle. The speakers were W.W. Henderson and Moses Thatcher both of whom gave appropriate and interesting talks. Beautiful flowers covered the casket and the pulpit. Mr. & Mrs. Bailey sand an appropriate composition. After the services we went to the car parked on the North part of the street when I backed out in some way or other there was an extra supply of fuel and the car shot across the street in great speed and hit a car parked on the East side which damaged both cars. Many people - including 3 or 4 police- men came on the scene. Mr. Larson the owner of the damaged car went to the Ford garage to settle the matter He acted very gentlemanly and we came to the understanding that I was respons 15 My dear devoted wife, assisted by some of her daughters and daughters in-law, had a gathering of our relatives at our home and were given a nice dinner. There were over fifty present and served with refreshments. Mr. & Mrs. Robert B. T. Taylor of S L.C. were with us. We had a very enjoyable time. I was feeling quite well and happy in being sown so much atten- tion by my dear wife and so many of our relatives, there being in all about 50. Counting the children there were sixty present. In the morning I went to Sunday school and meeting at both I was invited to speak, which I did Mon. Aug. 16 I took my car to Logan to be repaired where it had been injured in an accident on Main Street. 179 1937. Aug. Thurs. 19- Andrea & Basil Lamb and Robert Reese are here visiting with us. Yesterday I was quite poorly in health but feel better today. There has been quite a strong breeze. Lowell and Helen are contemplating buying a house or rather buying a house from A.J. Reese and make it do for awhile which I think is wise[-] than going in debt for an expensive house. I am feeling fairly well in health today. Sat. Aug 21- Very hot day. Arvel and Lowell are cutting grain for A.J. Reese; but it is so weedy that it is a heavy job. and there are very few who would un- dertake the job. We are getting ready to go to Logan in my car. Mother, Gene and her two little girls and Roberta, who is here visiting or rather staying with us Alta left her here a few days ago as she had some trips to make to Ogden. Andre & her little boy who had been with us several days went home last evening [following line goes up the right edge of the page] Willis came down for her. 180 1957 Aug. 25. Carrie, Helen, Norma & Gene went to Clarkston today to see Bro. & Sister Shumway with whom I borded two years while teaching in Clarkston. They are quite aged and infirm, however sister Sarah Shumway is the better of the two After pending a short time with them we went to Cornish to see John & Annie & family. We had a very pleasant visit and were treated to a splendid meal We got home shortly before sundown Aug. 26. The boys are still working in the meadow hay, and are not able to make very good headway due to water on the land that was recently turned on by those holding land east of mine. I am very thankful that my physical condition is fairly good. All the other members are well as far as I know. Since writing the the experiences up to Sept. 20, I have not written the account of many serious experiences the greatest of which was the very serious collision Cecil had in a head-on collision with Tom Watterson in which the boys - Blain Lamb was with Cecil and they were going down for Linn to go with them to North Cache. Watterson kept close to the South side of the road and Cecil was affraid they would have a collision so he pulled to the wrong side but Watterson did the same thing and the terrible clash came Our car was jammed into the Watterson car. Cecil escaped with a few scratches but Blaine was quite seriously hurt; he hit the front glass and nearly had his eyes put out but as good luck had it only the outer part of each eye was cut quite badly however at this writing he is able to go to school. The cost of fixing my car amounted to We are all feeling quite well today and mother and I have been listening to the Speaker at Confere 185 Oct. 2 1937 The boys are digging there potatoes today which are very good.
